Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page insearch engines via the “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Other forms of search engine marketing (SEM) target paid listings. In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search[1], news search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a website web presence.
You may of been tempted in the past to hire a person or company to enhance your position in search engine rankings. A page one listing almost guarantees that your site will be visited.
However, with the advent of blogs and free online tools, SEO is now in the hands of the ordinary person. You don’t have to pay anyone. Besides, no one can guarantee a page one listing, no matter what they promise in emails.
Coming up will be a set of posts all relating to SEO that you can do for yourself. As I mainly focus on ‘blogging for business’ I shall be giving examples involving WordPress. Especially as there are so many free plugins that can help with SEO.
If you have any questions, now is the time to ask so I can include the answers in series.
