Not all that glitters will produce gold

Not all that glitters produces gold

There seems to be a new social network making itself know every so often. The most recent being Pinterest. We have Facebook, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn and many others (see 15+ Social Networks You Wish You Knew About!). Can your business be on all of them?

To cut a long story short, no. Pick the networks that suit you best and concentrate on them. In my humble opinion, choose a max of 3. The reason for this is time, namely your time spent updating them. Why put the effort in on sites that won’t work well for you?

To make a social network really work for you, you have to commit to it. Regular updates and interacting with your fans or followers, automated services help but are no replacement.

Don’t let let them get bored or feel you don’t care anymore. There is nothing worse than walking in to a shop where the staff avoid you. Do you want to give that feeling on your chosen social networks?

The Benefits of Social Networking for Businesses

Social Networking - Facebook Twitter LinkedIn

This is a guest post by James Williams who is the Community Manager for TM International, a Paris-based recruitment agency

Social networking is not a new phenomenon. This won’t be the first time you’ve heard the term and if you are like the many millions of “constantly-connected” professionals out there it’s probably something you do on a regular basis. Networking has always been a great tool for businesses to reap benefits from, and that hasn’t changed. What’s changed is the way we network – what we do and how we do it. As technology continues along its path to world domination it’s becoming much more common for the “traditional” methods of networking to be replaced by new “social” techniques. However, what’s become clear to me is that there are still quite a large number of people who don’t really understand the benefits. Some don’t know why people do it, some don’t know what to do, some are unsure where to do it and some have no idea whatsoever and appear to have missed the whole social media revolution. So this can just be a general recap for everyone on why social networking is so important for your business.

The first area of benefit for social networking is awareness. Now the reason I say area of benefit is because there are a large number of benefits that occur from increased awareness as a sort of “knock-on effect.” Awareness is really the umbrella term under which a multitude of other benefits lie, and I will go on to discuss those. Social networking is the easiest and one of the most effective ways of increasing awareness of your business. The days of advertising in the local paper or magazine are behind us, with TV advertising likely to follow in the next few years. As a business trying to get your name out there you need to be where the people are. And where are these people? On social networks! Facebook’s got 850+ million users, LinkedIn is approaching 150 million and Twitter now has well over 300 million, and that’s not even mentioning the newest social network Google+ which has the fastest growth rate of any social network in history. So if you want people to be aware of your company then, without question, you have to have a presence on social networks.

But people being aware of you is just the start. The more people you reach, the more people will visit your profile on whichever social network. The more people who visit your profile, the more people will visit your website (provided you have included a link to it!). And with drastically increased traffic to your website and social networks there is a much bigger chance of you winning new business. For example, say you have a fan base of 200 on Facebook, a Twitter following of 300 and 500+ connections on LinkedIn. You then choose to advertise your product/service on LinkedIn. This has already reached your connections on that network instantly, and because you’ve linked up your LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook accounts, your post has been published on your Twitter feed and on your Facebook page. So before anyone has done anything, in the click of a button you have potentially reached around 1000 people. But that’s nothing! Social networking gives you the perfect opportunity for what I like to call “the ripple effect”. This is similar to the process of things going viral (apart from it’s not a YouTube video of a cat dancing). Your initial reach of 1000 people can be multiplied to an incredible number. Your LinkedIn connections share the post/information with their connections. Your audience on Facebook clicks “like,” sharing that information with every single one of their friends. And finally the people who follow you on Twitter “retweet” it to their followers and so on. That means, providing you post good content, you can grow your initial network of 1000 people to 20, 30, 40 times that. Without sounding too dramatic the possibilities are literally endless.

The problem with increasing the number of people who know about your business is that you are also increasing the potential number of people who can criticize you. However, if you are choosing to opt out of using social networks for your business, what’s important to remember is that people are going to talk about you online whether you have a presence there or not. Therefore social networks give you the opportunity to manage your e-reputation. You can use your social networks as a platform for your customers/clients. You can develop a relationship with them and create a personable online experience which allows the customer to voice their opinion in a way that will not prove negative for your image. By managing your e-reputation you create a much higher potential for customer loyalty, and therefore retention, as well as gaining new customers who will see your positive and helpful image online.

Because of the connection to customers which social networks provide you, social networking can also be a great way to understand customer needs. This can in turn allow you to come up with new ideas for your business or simply improve on previous mistakes because you now have channels which allow constant feedback. And as you know, listening to feedback is one of the most important factors when it comes to business success.

Keeping the customer/client in mind, social networking provides the perfect opportunity to target the right people. Through your social networks you can target relevant industry professionals, whether it be in LinkedIn groups, on a Facebook page or by using the # tag on Twitter. So this means you can implement a targeted marketing effort which will drastically increase your efficiency and effectiveness. It may sound obvious but once you know where your customers are it makes it much easier to communicate with them and social networking allows you to do just that!

And that’s just a few of the benefits that social networking can bring you. It really can’t be stressed enough that social networks are the place to be for today’s businesses, they are essential to your survival. Who knows, in the future the social network may even replace a company’s website.

What is the point of a business blog?

A business friend of mine said to me a few days ago, “what’s the point of writing for my blog, no one reads it”. She was speaking about her blog that is attached to her online shop.  The general assumption is that you should have a business blog but do you know why you should?

More pages for the search engines

Most businesses don’t have extensive websites. If you are small or a one-man-band then you most likely have a 5 page site. It won’t change and nothing for the search engines to come back for – nothing new to see. Add a blog and write a post a week and you will have, after a year, 52 new pages.

Not for you, it’s for your customers

A blog is not really for you or your business. It’ a communication channel, the way in which you demonstrate knowledge, announce new products. A way in which potential customers can ask questions, existing clients can keep in touch with new developments. So you business blog is for them, your customers.

Discovery – from visitor to customer

Having a 5 page website means less chance of being found on search engine results pages. You can increase your exposure by having more pages. A blog can do this for you easily, use it as a marketing tool. An almost free tool that can help you with social media by using RSS feeds etc.

Do you really mean, ‘no one reads it?’

One last thing, when you claim that no one reads your business blog, do you have the figures to prove it? Are you using an analytic’s package? Is there in fact, a lot of people visiting your blog but leaving disappointed that there is nothing new to see?

Google+ for business goes live

Google+ is now available for business (as reported on The Verge and Engadget), something a lot of companies have been waiting for. It’s taken 6 months to get here and apparently there is little difference to normal pages. Good news though that it is world wide.

From Google Blog, Google+ Pages: connect with all the things you care about

For businesses and brands, Google+ pages help you connect with the customers and fans who love you. Not only can they recommend you with a +1, or add you to a circle to listen long-term. They can actually spend time with your team, face-to-face-to-face. All you need to do is start sharing, and you’ll soon find the super fans and loyal customers that want to say hello.

I tried this out by creating a Google+ business page for this blog, it was really no different than a normal page.

How these business pages will compare against Facebook versions is any ones guess at the moment. But it does seem that Google is forging ahead so we are in for interesting times.

Unsure that a blog for your business will have impact?

I can understand that a business may think a blog has limited appeal to their clients. Should you give it a go? Worried about a blog for your business won’t return the money invested?

Then why not test it out?

In my own opinion, WordPress is one of the best blogging platforms out there. So if you are uncertain then why not try it out for free? WordPress.com allows you to create a blog that you don’t have to worry about hosting details, they host it for you.

If and when you want to expand your blog, it is much easier to export your content and load it in to your very own blog with your own hosting.

Which social network should I use for business?

Which social network you focus on depends on the message you are trying to put across and who you intend it for. So lets take a quick look at the top 3 networks and see what they can do for you.

Twitter

what is twitterAccording to research (Just how many active Twitter users are there?)…

… there are 56 million accounts on Twitter following 8 or more accounts. There are only 38 million following 16, and just 12 million following 64.

That’s against the claim by Twitter that there are 175 million registered users (from the above article). That’s still a lot of people.

While it’s good to use Twitter for announcing business activity, messages just fly by. Trying following 50 people or more and it can be hard to keep track. That’s why many use it for topics that are immediate, competitions, discounts, new products etc etc.

One trick bloggers use is to send out automatic tweets from their archive as well as new posts. By keeping a trickle of new tweets on the go, you can try and maintain a healthy profile.

The main use for Twitter? For all things that are immediate; real time events, discussions, questions and answers and maintaining a profile.

Facebook

According to Facebook, there are

  • More than 800 million active users
  • More than 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day
  • Average user has 130 friends

Facebook is indeed a social place, it started off for students then on to friends and family. With the amount of interaction going on, business caught on and did very well out of it.

With business pages and groups, a business can keep their future customers, clients and fans updated and hooked. It also encourages interaction so ‘fans’ feel they are a part of whats going on.

The main use of Facebook? Community building around products and brands. Building trust and the feel of a one to one relationship. Brand loyalty can be maintained and increased.

Google Plus

While Google has been around for about 12 years, this is the first real foray in to proper social networking. This brand new service has 25 million users, according to the Search Engine Journal.

Business pages are not yet available so it is filled with individuals trying to get around and finding out how they can make the best use of it. New features are still being added and bugs are being squashed.

So while it seems Google Plus is limited, now is the time to get used to it and be around when the business pages are added. Ever thought to yourself, wish I had used Facebook and Twitter ages ago? Well now’s your chance to be at the begging of Google’s new venture in to social networking.

The main use of Google Plus? Great for individuals networking with each other and sharing interesting stuff. Until the business pages turn up, it’s yet to be proved what it can do for brands, products and services.

Why FAQ’s are useful to you and your readers

Frequently asked questions

FAQ’s or ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ is basically a big list of questions and answers relevant to a topic, product, person or…well anything really. Lets look at it from a business point of view and see why it can help you and your readers.

Why it’s good for you

If you have been business for a while then you most likely already know the top 5 or 10 questions your potential clients ask. If you run a shop then questions can be answered by yourself or by giving the potential client suitable leaflets. Not so much of a problem.

It can be really annoying however, when you get heaps of emails all with the same range of questions. That is why you should create a dedicated page with top questions and their answers. An easy resource you can point people to.

That sorts out the general FAQ but you can go one further, be product specific. You can create a FAQ for some or all of your products, again the top range of questions.

By having these FAQ’s, site visitors will be able to find the answer to their questions and you will have less email!

Why it’s good for your site visitors

It saves them time, they can get an immediate answer to their questions with out having to email you. They can check out a product FAQ and see that it does do what they want, it does solve their problem. It shows you understand their needs and have lots of experience with that product.

If they are looking to buy and see that your products do what they want, they will be likely to buy from you.

Business profiles coming soon on Google Plus

So far, the once invite only service Google Plus has been for users only. Businesses have been stopped from creating user profiles for their own use. Any found were removed.

According to Adage article, Google+ Lays the Groundwork for Business Profiles

At Ad Age’s Digital West conference last week, Christian Oestlien, group product manager for social advertising at Google, announced it’s close to unveiling Google+ business profiles that will permit companies to create pages and circles like those of an individual user of the social network. It’s an about-face from a July blog post in which Mr. Oestlien wrote that businesses should refrain from setting up profiles, noting a policy team was working to shut down profiles set up on behalf of companies. A number were killed, including those for Sesame Street, MTV and Mashable, all of which had enthusiastically tried to set up a presence on Google+ only to be told Google+ wasn’t ready for them.

The question many will be asking, do I need another business page? Hard to tell at this stage. If ‘circles’ are being offered then I can only assume that business profiles will be interactive. If they are to be treated the same as user profiles then the answer will be yes, you may well need another profile. However in my view it will need some level of automation. Will these profiles allow RSS feeds to be added?

Another new element in your social marketing mix…

New advertising network from Start Business in France

Valerie from StartBusinessFrance.com has announced a new way to advertise your business. Your advert gets shown on business websites who are part of a network. Each member of the network shows other members adverts. More members there are, more times your advert gets shown.

When any web page with an ad on is viewed, a single ad from the network is displayed. The next time the same web page is viewed a different ad is shown. Ads are displayed sequentially and evenly so that every ad on the network gets equal views on all the sites on the network.

Think of a pool of 99 ads and 99 websites, each ad will be shown sequentially and evenly on every site 24 hours a day – so during any one day every ad will appear repeatedly on every site.

The network is due officially in mid October but to see an example of an advert visit the Screwpak site (scroll down a little, it’s on the left hand side).

The fee for joining, €99 a year, seems very fair (€1.90 a week) and it always helps when you know in advance your advertising costs.

So far the advert size is 120 pixels by 90 pixels with space for 80 characters. This may limit interest as lots of blogs are adorned with banners that are 125 x 125. That industry size fits many themes and any other size would upset designs and layouts.

It’s great to see innovation and promotion of expat business’s, but would you use it? Please leave your comments below…

Q and A with Maggie Pascoe

q and a with english speaking women in france

Maggie Pascoe, State Registered Nurse, started a business in France based on her knowledge of health care. Leaving behind her business in the UK, Maggie has moved on to providing health products and sharing her experience and wisdom.

Can you briefly describe yourself, some background and your business?

History wise, I trained at the Radcliffe, Oxford as a SRN,( back in the days when the Radcliffe was up the Woodstock Road!! ie: many years ago !) this led me, in turn, to start Q.R.S Care Ltd, a domiciliary care agency in Suffolk, long before the “Care in the Community” act came into being.

We moved to France in 1998, 13 & half years ago. At the time we still had our domiciliary care agency, in Suffolk. It was going very well and we had all the support systems in place, staff, manager, secretary, IT input, accountant, in fact everything needed to be successful, which we were, very ! But I wanted more; a desire to move to France. It had been my dream for many years. So, there was my dream, a desire for a challenge & a challenge is certainly what we found!

So here we are in France, May 1998!

We started a conventional business, statutes with an advocate, accountant, business account at the bank, registered for VAT & all that the French system requires. Don’t forget this was 1998, long before all the new systems in France. I sometimes wonder if they have ever changed?!!

It was a wonderful experience, but we encountered every single challenge that any system could throw at us, so we reluctantly, after many a fight, closed our doors.

My business, with a nursing background, now, is sharing the knowledge of potentially safe products, showing how by changing to safe products one can improve ones life – health wise & financially.

What prompted you to starting a business in France? Did the skills or qualifications gained elsewhere help?

As I have been using Neways products for the last 13 years, I thought that by introducing them to friends in France, they could realise the same benefits as I have gained, plus realising the potential financial reward, without the usual capital investment.

The skills that I have are basically “experience” nothing more. Anyone can start regardless of what they have done previously.

Do you think as a woman it is harder or easier to be in business ?

This business is for anyone, no matter of sex, creed colour or persuasion that is the great thing about it; no-one can predict who will be successful. It depends entirely on personal motivation, which is what excites me the most.

Are you able to work your business around your family?

Most certainly. This is a business, where you dictate the hours, and times. It is a business that is tailor made for anyone who wishes to create their business around their family. It is in fact a “family business”! You create a healthier life for your family; you share it with friends, who in turn share it – the story has no end! This is what makes it easy for me, I’m a “people person” all I’m trying to do is to show people how they can improve their life and wealth by changing their “toothpaste”!!

Were your business plans part of your move to France or something you became interested in afterwards?

No! I became interested after I moved to France.

Initially, I was involved in trying to make my conventional business succeed.

After I realised that this was not the way forward for us, I looked for alternatives.

I became aware that the ingredients in mainstream personal care products were becoming a controversial issue; so I looked to Neways, products which I was already using. This to me seemed the way forward. So this is what I invest my time in.

Do you find various French agencies, such as your local CCI, helpful and willing to assist?

I cannot really comment, the only help I’ve looked for is from the Féderation de Vente Directe www.fvd.fr, who have up-to date- information.

Are men that you have to deal with in your business life understanding or treating you differently?

I have no problems here. As I stated previously, what I do is open to anyone, therefore

I do not feel that gender comes into it.

If someone wants to achieve a goal, then their main objective is to get there, regardless!!

What is your own personal view of social media such as Facebook and Twitter? Good for business?

In my view, social networking is the way forward. It is networking! Which is what I do, therefore it can only be for the good. A very powerful marketing tool.

Do you have anything to say to other women who want to start a business?

All I can say is that this way of doing business is the most natural way in the world “gossiping”, chatting to mates, friends, soul mates or however you define “friends”! Tell it as it is. We all like to share stories,( the latest skin cream, the latest hair care etc,) share this one and start your own business. It’s natural, it’s fun and anyone can do it. If I can, you can!
